| SCENE ONE
Time of Darkness |

|
A
huge, branched and variously ramified scaffolding, whose manifold layers
seem to be painstakingly organized through combining ladders, bridges,
dangerous pathways, but also gorges and other hindrances.
Incessantly people, animals and machines are occupied with repairing, improving as well as sabotaging and destroying the incomprehensible entanglement of manifold materials.
Preparation
of the Golden Age Inside the world-scaffolding we perceive the many-layered structure of human existence, in its tragedy and in its greatness. Before our eyes a world of rising and falling unfolds: the world as “yesterday” – “today” – “tomorrow”, human growth, human degeneration – including individuals, families, whole nations. Here someone lives in the stone-age, his neighbour in the blossoming age of religious and philosophical endeavour, a third one dedicates himself fully to the romanticism of technical science and the adherent ideology. Some individuals start to spread All-Father’s teaching. Here human spirit and human deed are demonstrated next to human impotency and human failing. In this scenery everything has been captured for which man in the time of darkness has sacrificed his life, for which he worked, for which he aspired; here man reveals his deepest ignorance about the purpose of life; all this captured in the day to day life of that world. But here we also find the seed of knowledge which guides mankind to fulfilment. And this entire performance in its change is upheld, controlled and corrected – ennobled – by the computer standing in the central point; the seemingly most effective spirit of that time. They all serve its technical growth for perfection, they all trust its statements, and they all execute its instructions. The computer faces, with eternal indifference, the bustle on the colourless world-square: it supplies results, it knows no illness, death or pain, it does not shout, does not smile, it is objective, fast, precise, specific and general – it is comprehensive. And they all have one thing in common: trying. |
